It’s something we do every day. It’s not a big deal. In fact, we don’t usually give it a second thought but it’s almost as important as breathing. All day long, our bodies throw off dead skin cells as we regenerate new ones. This renewal of skin is an important part of our anatomy that serves to protect us from harsh elements and to keep water and nutrients inside our body where they belong. If it didn’t occur, it would be like using a worn out umbrella with holes to protect us from the sun and rain.
Something else we do every day – we get older. And there’s not one way to age. There are two. Intrinsic aging involves elastin production, sweat and oil gland functions and collagen loss. Beginning at the age of 20, we lose about 1% of our collagen each year. While intrinsic aging is a part of life that can’t be halted, there are ways to slow it down a bit.
Extrinsic aging, on the other hand can be somewhat controlled through lifestyle choices and habits. Over exposure to the sun, pollution and smoking cause a thickening of the outer layer of skin. This causes a rough, uneven tone, brown patches and deep wrinkles. Staying out of the harsh environmental elements, taking precautions with sun over load, not smoking and using good skin care products are all helpful ways to minimizing this part of aging.
There are other ways to stay ahead of the aging progression. New technology and improvements in procedures have brought about amazing advances in skin care and skin care products. SkinMedica is at the forefront when it comes to physician recommended, advanced products that deliver remarkable results.
One such product is our October featured Vitalized Peel, a superficial peel that will help your complexion appear much more uniform and smooth. The Vitalize Peel® is great for patients with mild-to-moderate skin imperfections that result from skin aging and sun exposure, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and texture. Vitalize Peel®treatments also address skin unevenness that can be caused by acne scarring or other pigmentary changes. It can be used on all skin types.
It only takes 45 minutes, which includes ample time to address any questions you may have, and a discussion on your post peel care. The actual application procedure is approximately 20 minutes. Tolerance to the procedure varies from patient to patient. A tingling or burning sensation is normal and usually subsides in a few minutes.
You might see a yellowish tinge on the skin, which is expected to last no longer than 2-3 hours. Mild to moderate redness is expected after any type of chemical peel procedure. The extent of redness varies from patient to patient. The face may appear redder than usual for some time after the treatment and completely resolves after the peeling is complete.
Because the new skin is more susceptible to sunburn, extra precautions should be taken to limit sun exposure for at least one week after the peel. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen product with an SPF of 30 or higher. You can resume the use of your regular treatment products after you have completely finished peeling.
You will notice an improvement in the appearance of overall skin condition, diminishment in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoothness of skin texture, more even skin color, and improved skin clarity.
Multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. The number of treatments is based on initial level of skin damage, and can vary from 3 to 6 spaced three to four weeks apart. The effect of the peel is cumulative and results are favorable when the peels are used in conjunction with SkinMedica® daily product regimen.
