Orange Peel Skin

Love the taste of oranges? Full of vitamin C and a great source of fiber, the orange is full of health benefits as is its protective covering. The orange peel may be even richer in nutrients but it’s rarely eaten because of its bitter taste. You could say it “get’s a bad wrap.” Especially when we use the texture of the orange peel to describe a particular condition of the human skin. Makes you want to stay away from oranges altogether.

“Orange peel” skin refers to the combination of dehydration and poor cell turnover that contributes to the look of an orange peel on the nose and cheeks of the face.  Cell buildup around the pores enhances the shadows and makes the pores appear larger.  Dehydration adds a cellophane-like sheen to the skin, enhancing a rough texture and pore appearance.  Orange peel skin on the chin can be more dramatic with textural changes and pitting.

In order to improve the appearance of orange peel skin, you’ll need to get proactive with your total skin care.  It involves plumping the skin, correcting dehydration, and removing dead skin cells that enhance the look of the pores and skin texture.  A physician approved skin care product is pivotal to your success.

Skin Medica offers a full line of moisture and hydrating products with unique combinations of ingredients to restore the skin’s hydration and moisture balance.  The HARejuvenating Hydrator, for example, provides support for the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid as it smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Light facial peels, microdermabrasion, and ultrasonic treatments can also help improve the look of orange peel skin.  Facial peels remove a very superficial layer of dead skin to smooth texture, reduce shadowing of lines and wrinkles, and enlarged pores.  Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and amplifies the penetration of topically applied skin care products. We offer Laser Genesis Skin Therapy, an advanced way to promote vibrant and youthful looking skin.  It uses laser technology to treat problems like excessive redness, large pores, uneven texture, scarring, fine lines and wrinkles.  The results are subtle for individual treatments, but the overall effect of multiple treatments is more noticeable.  Typically, 4-6 treatments are needed.

Medical microneedling treatments have achieved incredible results and might also be considered.  Medical microneedling, which we perform using the Eclipse Micropen, essentially consists of going over the area with an array of needles that penetrate and break up the surface of the pore or scar and of any underlying abnormal fibrous tissue that may be contributing.  Disrupting the surface of the dilated pore, pit, or small scar triggers collagen production and allows for the possibility healing with a smoother surface texture.

You might also consider adding facial injections to your quest for correcting orange peel skin.  These can improve aging skin concerns by facilitating collagen and elastin synthesis, reducing laxity, and smoothing wrinkles.

A neurotoxin such as Botox, can be injected sparingly in the mentalis muscle of the chin to help relax muscle contractions that contribute to pitting of the area.

Dermal fillers such as Juvederm can be injected at the mental crease to reduce the appearance of the line and improve the look of the chin.

With a bit of effort on your part, using a superior skin care product with your home regimen, adding facial treatments to your routine and considering a filler or two, that unsightly orange peel skin will greatly improve.  And so might your taste for oranges.
